Audiences and Institutions: The Woman in Black (Watkins, 2012)

1. Why do you think the primary and secondary target audience is for The Woman in black? Why?

Personally, I think the primary audience is young adults/ teenagers. This is because the main selling point of the film is how the main star is Daniel Radcliffe, Who played the popular role of Harry Potter and this is his first big screen outing of the adult and more mature Harry. Therefore it will attract Harry Potter fans. I believe the secondary audience is horror lovers. The film had been adapted from a book therefore it already had a fan base from that.

2.  How was The Woman in Black marketed? ( Think about genre(s), subgenre (s), media platforms, target audience, promotions, size of campaign, etc.)

The woman in black was marketed in many different ways. Through large social networking campaigns via twitter and Facebook is a main way. Daniel Radcliffe was the key part in marketing, being largely stated on every advertisement  as well as the audience viewing his recognisable face of posters etc. He also took part in interviews on big television shows such as the Jonathon Ross show  to promote his new blockbuster.  Merchandise was also released to fans to purchase such as t shirts and mugs.

3. Do you think the marketing materials for the film were appropriate? Why?

I think that the marketing materials were appropriate. The trailer was clearly edited and made to the 12 certified film age rating. Nothing particularly is shown that is scary as it didn’t give it away for the film overall as well as keeping the 12 rating. The majority of the marketing material was of Daniel Radcliffe being the main selling point for the film, having a celebrity image that keeps up everything he done being appropriate for the primary target audience.

4.What kind of release did the film have? (big/small? How many cinemas showed the film on its release?)

From this you can see that is have a large release. It made 127 million dollars worldwide , showing in 2856 theatres. The film had a budget of 17 million dollars and just of the opening weekend they had grossed 20 million dollars. The Woman in Black became the biggest British horror film of all time.

5.How much did the woman in black cost to make? (production budget) and what was the industry impact on the woman in black? (this box office and trends)

As said the production budget was around 17 million dollars and it then made over this money on just the opening weekend with the 20 million dollars. For the film industry the woman in black had a huge impact being how successful it was and has had other studios making similar paranormal film to try and match the success of the woman in black.

.6.  Why do you think the film was so successful? (you must come up with at least two reasons)

The main reason why the film was so successful was because of the big star Daniel Radcliffe used. He is a well-known actors and has a huge fan base to bring to woman in black. Another reason why I believe the film is successful is because of what extent the producers went through to advertise the film on the market. Interviews, merchandise, billboards etc was covered to create more interest for people to want to go and watch the film.
