How effective is the combination of my main product and ancillary texts?
A film distributor is responsible for getting the film out to the public eye. Some famous film distributors include 20th century fox,co.ltd and Columbia picture. They use a wide range of techniques and platforms to get their product noticed by the target audience. Some including t.v /cinema ads, Posters and online advertising. Posters are place where lots of people in the general public will see them for example public transport stops and stations, motorways and shopping malls.
-A example of a film advert on a bus.
Its important for film distributors to understand the target audience,Therefore audience research is crucial. The audience can hugely create how a film is marketed. By finding out the audiences likes and dislikes the distributor can plan on how to introduce the film to them.
A example is Final Destination 5, This movie is known for its thriller style gore. When a movie this this is advertising, it normally chooses the internet as a main type of advertising. This is because the audience is teen/young adult and people within this ages group make up a large percent of internet users so it only seems right for the distributer to use internet to advertise being free and location isn't a aspect that they need to think about whereas would be for outside adverts. Heres a trailer of Final destination 5 on YouTube.
As you can see this has 700,000 views and is known as a 'viral' campaign. This means it relys on people seeing it and showing their friends and continues to grow like this.
However, films like final destination 5 need to be carefully organised and developed. Timings of adverts need to be appropriate for the audience (restrict a certain age to be able to view the video on the internet, also showing the advert on TV at appropriate later times to avoid complaints concerning younger people being able to view the advert.
Warner Bros ran a campaign through underground and London buses which caused a stir through families and younger people through the complaints. It was a successful advertising scheme however drew in bad publicity due to adverts shin in day hours to younger generations.
Woman in black is a example of a film which was altered in the adverts so it could be shown in earlier hours to reach the audience. They altered it but cutting scenes, darkening and distorting parts so it was suitable but still as attracting to the audience. Due to research women in black had a huge release with Daniel Radcliffe as the main character and was key in drawing in the large fan base from 'Harry Potter'. He was the main face on adverts and his familiar face therefore interested the eye of the key audience.
Here is a example of the film poster for woman in black, having him as the main focus and only his name in the top central position suggesting his importance to the film. The poster also tells me what genre it is with the eerie effects and ghost images in the background. The Audience know exactly what they are paying to see from the trailer and poster of woman in black without giving the story plot away, still holding a aspect of mystery which is what i think is very important when advertising a film.
Here are the ways that i used my trailer, magazine front cover and poster and poster to market and distribute my film-
